What VLT means
VLT (Visible Light Transmission) is the percentage of visible light that passes through a window once tint film is applied - it’s the number on every tint percentage you’ve seen quoted, like “20% tint” or “5% limo tint.” A 5% VLT film lets only 5% of light through (very dark, often called “limo tint”), while a 50% VLT film lets half the light through (a very light, barely-there tint). Lower percentage means darker glass; higher percentage means lighter glass. This one number is what shops, manufacturers, and (in most places) regulators all use to describe and measure tint darkness.
It’s important to note that VLT is a combined measurement - it accounts for both the film’s own light transmission and the glass’s natural, factory-installed tint. Most factory glass already has some VLT reduction on its own (rear windows especially), so adding a film rated at a certain VLT doesn’t always mean the final combined VLT matches the film’s label exactly.
Common percentages and appearance
Here’s roughly what each common percentage looks like from outside the vehicle, though actual appearance varies by glass and lighting:
- 50% VLT - a light, barely-noticeable tint. Mostly used for basic UV/heat reduction on front windows in regions where darker front tint isn’t permitted, or as a subtle factory-look upgrade.
- 35% VLT - a moderate, popular “factory tint” look. Dark enough to read as intentional, light enough to see clearly into the cabin during the day. A common choice for front side windows where local limits allow it.
- 20% VLT - a noticeably dark tint, one of the most requested percentages for rear windows and a popular full-vehicle look on trucks and SUVs where regulations are typically more permissive on rear glass.
- 5% VLT - very dark, often called “limo tint.” Cabin visibility from outside is minimal, especially in daylight. Frequently restricted or banned for front windows in many jurisdictions even where it’s allowed on rear glass.
Windshields are usually treated separately from side and rear glass in most regulations, often limited to a light tint strip along the top or a clear, UV-blocking film with no visible darkness at all.
Film technology, separate from darkness
VLT percentage tells you how dark a tint is, but it says nothing about what the film is actually made of - and the underlying technology matters as much as the percentage for how the tint performs day to day:
- Dyed film - a layer of dye laminated between adhesive and a protective top coat. The most affordable option, offering solid glare reduction and a uniform, non-reflective look. It offers comparatively less heat rejection than ceramic or carbon films and is more prone to fading toward a purple or brownish tint over years of UV exposure, especially with lower-quality dye.
- Metallic film - embeds tiny metallic particles that reflect heat and add durability, historically a step up from dyed film for heat rejection. Its drawback is that the metallic layer can interfere with radio, GPS, cell signal, and some in-car electronics, which has made it less popular as ceramic film has become more affordable.
- Carbon film - a matte, non-reflective finish with better heat rejection than dyed film and no signal interference, sitting price-wise between dyed and ceramic.
- Ceramic film - the current top tier for most installers: excellent heat rejection without needing to go dark, no signal interference, strong fade resistance, and the best clarity-to-heat-rejection ratio available. It costs more per window than the other technologies, which is reflected in the material line of a ceramic quote.
Two films at the identical VLT percentage can feel completely different in a hot climate - a 20% dyed film and a 20% ceramic film look the same darkness from outside, but the ceramic film will keep the cabin noticeably cooler. This is the detail that’s easy to miss when a customer shops purely by percentage instead of asking what film technology is behind that percentage.

This is the single most important thing to know about window tint percentages: legal minimum VLT limits vary by state, province, and country, and they often differ by window position (front side, rear side, rear windshield) and sometimes by vehicle type (sedans vs. SUVs and vans are frequently treated differently, since SUVs and vans often have more permissive rear-window rules). Some regions also regulate reflectivity and specific banned colors (like red or amber tint) separately from VLT.

None of that changes based on how confident an installer sounds about “what’s normal” - the only reliable source is the current regulation for your specific vehicle type and window position, which is worth a five-minute check before committing to a percentage darker than the legal minimum.
How tint is priced
Window tint is typically quoted per coverage package rather than by square foot the way body wraps often are, because window sizes are fairly standardized within a given package type:
- All windows - the full-vehicle package: all side windows plus the rear windshield. The most common request and typically the best per-window value since it’s quoted as one job.
- Front two - just the driver and front passenger windows, common when rear windows are already factory-tinted or the customer only wants the front matched to an existing rear tint.
- Windshield visor strip - a narrow strip along the top of the windshield, often the only windshield tint permitted in many regions.
Material choice also affects price meaningfully: dyed films are the most affordable option and offer solid glare reduction, but provide less heat rejection and are more prone to fading over time. Ceramic films cost more but offer significantly better heat rejection without needing to go as dark, plus better fade resistance and signal clarity for radio, GPS, and cell reception (some metallic films can interfere with signals - ceramic doesn’t).
Labor for tint work is comparatively fast versus a full wrap - most vehicles can be fully tinted in a few hours - so pricing tends to be driven more by material choice and window count than by the labor-hour-heavy formula that governs full-body wrap pricing. A shop quoting both services side by side (tint and wrap) will typically show tint as a smaller, faster line item even on a vehicle getting a full color change at the same visit.
Choosing a percentage
For customers deciding what to ask for: start with your region’s legal limit for front windows as a ceiling, then decide how much darker you want the rear glass, which is often permitted to go darker than the front almost everywhere. If heat rejection matters more to you than darkness - hot climates, long commutes, garage-free parking - ask specifically about ceramic film’s heat-rejection rating rather than just picking a VLT percentage, since two films at the same darkness can perform very differently against heat.
For shops: showing a customer what a specific VLT percentage will actually look like on their exact vehicle, rather than a generic sample chip, removes a lot of the back-and-forth in the sales conversation - and pairs naturally with a wrap or PPF quote on the same visit, since tint is frequently added as a line item to a larger service rather than booked completely on its own.
Care after installation
Freshly installed tint needs a curing period before it’s treated normally - most installers recommend leaving windows rolled up for 3-5 days (longer in cold or humid weather) to let the adhesive fully bond, and avoiding washing the inside of tinted glass for at least a week. Small water bubbles or a slightly hazy look immediately after install are normal parts of the curing process and typically clear up on their own; they’re not a sign of a bad install unless they’re still present weeks later.
Once cured, tinted windows should be cleaned with a soft cloth and an ammonia-free glass cleaner - ammonia-based cleaners can degrade the film’s adhesive and dye layer over time, causing premature fading or lifting at the edges. Rolling windows down periodically (once fully cured) is fine and doesn’t damage properly installed film.
What to ask a shop before booking
A few questions separate a shop that will get you a clean, long-lasting result from one that might not: what film technology (dyed, ceramic, carbon) is included at each price point, what warranty covers bubbling or fading, and whether they’ll confirm your local legal VLT limits before installing anything darker than the front-window minimum. A shop that can answer all three clearly, and that quotes VLT percentage alongside the film technology rather than percentage alone, is a good sign you’re getting a considered install rather than a one-size-fits-all darkness with no regard for how it’ll perform or whether it’s road-legal where you drive.
