How much vinyl does a car need?
The honest answer is "it depends on the vehicle" - a two-door coupe and a full-size van are not the same job. As a generic, body-style-level starting point (before you pick a specific make and model above):
- Sedan: 200-280 sq ft for a full wrap
- Coupe: 175-250 sq ft for a full wrap
- SUV / crossover: 250-330 sq ft for a full wrap
- Truck: 280-380 sq ft for a full wrap
- Van: 350-450 sq ft for a full wrap
These are generic estimates, not vehicle-specific numbers - the calculator above uses each vehicle's own published range when you pick a make and model, which is tighter and more useful for actual planning. Partial coverage (hood, roof, mirrors, bumpers) is a fraction of a full wrap, and the calculator's coverage options let you see that fraction directly instead of guessing at a percentage.
Whatever the sq ft range, buy more than the bare minimum - a 15% waste factor for overlap, pattern matching, and trim mistakes is baked into this calculator's linear-foot output, which is the number that actually maps to how much film you order off a roll.
Typical Canadian and US market cost ranges
WrapForce does not set prices; shops do. The ranges below are typical Canadian and US market ranges per sq ft, installed, by finish tier - last reviewed 2026-07-15. Your local market, the vehicle's complexity, and the shop's own overhead all move the real number for a specific job.
| Finish tier | Canada (per sq ft, installed) | US (per sq ft, installed) |
|---|---|---|
| Gloss (solid color) | CA$10-18 | $5-12 |
| Satin / matte | CA$11-19 | $6-13 |
| Metallic / pearl | CA$12-20 | $8-14 |
| Textured / directional | CA$14-22 | $10-16 |
| Color shift | CA$16-25 | $12-18 |
| Chrome | CA$20-32 | $15-25 |

Frequently asked questions
How much vinyl does my car actually need?+
It depends on the vehicle and how much of it you're covering. As a rough starting point (before you pick a specific vehicle above): a sedan runs about 200-280 sq ft, a coupe 175-250 sq ft, an SUV or crossover 250-330 sq ft, a truck 280-380 sq ft, and a van 350-450 sq ft for a full wrap. Picking your actual make and model above gives a tighter, vehicle-specific range instead of this generic one.
Why does the calculator show a range instead of one exact number?+
Real installs vary - trim level, options, and how a specific installer handles overlap and pattern matching all shift the real number. The range you see already includes a waste factor, so it's meant to be a realistic planning window, not a single number that overstates precision the underlying data doesn't have.
What does the waste factor account for?+
Vinyl doesn't lay down at exactly the panel's dimensions - overlap, pattern matching, trim mistakes, and the occasional re-print on a tricky curve all add up. This calculator bakes in a 15% waste factor on top of the raw material range before converting to linear feet, so the linear-foot number is what you'd actually want to buy, not the bare minimum.
Are the market cost ranges what WrapForce charges?+
No - WrapForce does not set prices; shops do. The ranges below are typical Canadian and US market ranges pulled from public pricing guides (see the sources on this page), meant to give you a sense of what shops in each market commonly charge per sq ft by finish tier. Your local market, the vehicle's complexity, and the shop's own overhead all move the real number.
What's the difference between the installed price and the DIY toggle?+
Installed pricing is what a shop typically charges for material plus labor. The DIY toggle switches to material-only pricing - roughly what the film itself costs per sq ft if you're buying vinyl to install yourself. DIY installs still take real skill and tools; this toggle only changes the cost basis, not the difficulty.
My vehicle isn't in the list - what do I do?+
Use "Vehicle not listed?" above to switch to a generic body-style estimate (sedan, coupe, SUV/crossover, truck, or van). It won't be as tight as a vehicle-specific range, but it's a reasonable starting point for planning.
Want an exact quote, not a range?
This tool gives planning ranges. For an exact price on your vehicle, ask a wrap shop for a real quote - WrapForce prices every quote from the vehicle's real panel measurements, plus scheduling, deposits, and job tracking in one place for the shops running it.
