Windshield

Sunscreening material is allowed only along a strip at the top of the windshield, and only if it is transparent and does not encroach upon the driver's direct forward viewing area defined as the AS-1 portion of the windshield in FMVSS No. 205 (FS 316.2952).

Reflectivity

Front side windows: total solar reflectance of visible light not more than 25 percent as measured on the nonfilm side (FS 316.2953). Windows behind the driver: total solar reflectance of visible light not more than 35 percent (FS 316.2954).

Medical exemption

FS 316.29545 provides medical exemption certificates for persons with lupus, any autoimmune disease, or other conditions requiring limited exposure to light, guided by the Medical Advisory Board. The certificate lists the vehicle and decal number, and is nontransferable, becoming void on sale or transfer of the vehicle.

Enforcement

Violations of FS 316.2953 and 316.2954 are noncriminal traffic infractions punishable as nonmoving violations under chapter 318. FS 316.29545 also exempts undercover law enforcement vehicles and vehicles owned by certified process servers or licensed private investigators.

Notes

Passenger car values: front side windows and side wings at least 28 percent light transmittance in the visible light range; windows behind the driver (rear side windows and rear window) at least 15 percent. Multipurpose passenger vehicles may use material with at least 6 percent light transmittance on windows behind the driver. The statute requires the material to meet the specification when applied to and tested on the glass of the specific vehicle, which is a combined glass-plus-film measurement. If the rear window is covered with nontransparent material, the vehicle must have side mirrors on both sides meeting FS 316.294. This summary is informational and is not legal advice.
