The rules, window by window

Windshield

Nonreflective window tinting film or sunscreening devices may not be applied to the windshield below the AS-1 line, or below 6 inches from the top of the exposed windshield if no AS-1 line exists.

Reflectivity

Luminous reflectance of no more than 35 percent, with a plus or minus 3 percent tolerance.

Medical exemption

A vehicle operated by, or carrying as a passenger, a person who possesses written verification from a licensed physician that tinting beyond the standard limits is medically necessary for protection from sun or heat may use lower limits (70 percent on the windshield area and 20 percent on windows per the section text reviewed). The documentation must be carried in the vehicle.

Notes

Values per Idaho Code 49-944: front side windows (immediately adjacent to the driver) and front vent windows at least 35 percent light transmission; rear side windows at least 20 percent; rear window at least 35 percent; all with a plus or minus 3 percent tolerance. The section text reviewed contained no sedan versus MPV/SUV class distinction; standards apply uniformly to motor vehicles. Only nonreflective tinting film is contemplated, with the 35 percent luminous reflectance cap. The section text reviewed did not state whether measurement is net film or combined with glazing.
