Windshield

Any allowable windshield treatment may be applied only to the uppermost part of the windshield and cannot extend below the AS-1 line.

The standard in the law's own words

The underlying prohibition targets windows tinted or covered such that occupants cannot be easily identified or recognized through the window from outside.

Reflectivity

Total solar reflectance of visible light must not exceed 25 percent, as measured on the nonfilm side.

Medical exemption

A person is exempt if the driver or a regular passenger requires shielding from the sun for medical reasons, with a physician's or optometrist's certification renewed annually and carried in the vehicle.

Enforcement

A vehicle may not be inspected, searched, or detained solely because of a violation of this section. Factory tinting that complies with FMVSS 205 (49 CFR 571.205) is permitted with manufacturer documentation carried in the vehicle.

Notes
