The rules, window by window

Windshield

No sign, poster, nontransparent material, window application, reflective film, or nonreflective film upon or in the front windshield, except tinted film along the top edge not extending more than 4 inches from the top of the windshield, or lower than the shade band, whichever is closer to the top (MCL 257.709).

The standard in the law's own words

The front-zone rule is a positional prohibition (no applications on the windshield or front side windows except the 4-inch top strip and required certificates/stickers that do not obstruct vision), rather than a numeric VLT standard.

Reflectivity

A rear window or side window to the rear of the driver may not be composed of, covered by, or treated with a material that creates a total solar reflectance of 35% or more in the visible light range, including a silver or gold reflective film (MCL 257.709).

Color restrictions

Silver or gold reflective film is specifically named in the rear-window reflectance prohibition. No other color-specific ban was identified in the section text reviewed.

Medical exemption

A special window treatment or application determined necessary by a physician or optometrist to protect a light-sensitive or photosensitive person is permitted if the owner or operator carries a letter signed by the physician or optometrist stating the treatment is a medical necessity, and the treatment does not interfere with or obstruct the driver's clear vision of the highway or an intersecting highway (MCL 257.709).

Enforcement

MCL 257.709 itself states the equipment prohibitions; penalties are handled under the Michigan Vehicle Code's general enforcement provisions rather than within this section.

Notes

Michigan sets no minimum VLT percentage for any window. Front side windows immediately adjacent to the driver or front passenger may carry tinted film only along the top 4 inches; below that, applications are prohibited regardless of darkness, so the frontSide value is null with restrictions still applying. Windows to the rear of the driver and the rear window may be tinted to any darkness, limited only by the total solar reflectance cap of less than 35% in the visible light range. Vehicles registered outside Michigan are exempt, and decorative applications on rear and rear-side windows are addressed separately in the section. No sedan-vs-MPV/SUV distinction is drawn.
