The rules, window by window

Windshield

Sunscreening material below the AS-1 line must be clear and transparent; sunscreening material above the AS-1 line may not be red, yellow, or amber in color. The AS-1 line means the line marked 'AS-1' on most windshields, or, where not marked, a line five inches below and parallel to the top of the windshield.

The standard in the law's own words

Neb. Rev. Stat. section 60-6,257(1)(a) sets a general qualitative prohibition, independent of the numeric limits, against tinting any window so that the driver's clear view is reduced or outside visibility into the vehicle is substantially impaired.

Reflectivity

Sunscreening or other transparent material on the front side windows, and on the rear window or side windows behind the front seat, may not have a luminous reflectance of more than 35% (Neb. Rev. Stat. section 60-6,257(1)(c)-(d)).

Color restrictions

Sunscreening material above the windshield AS-1 line may not be red, yellow, or amber in color (Neb. Rev. Stat. section 60-6,257(1)(b)).

Medical exemption

No medical exemption or waiver provision was found within the text of section 60-6,257 itself as fetched from the official Nebraska Legislature site. This does not rule out an exemption existing elsewhere in the Nebraska Revised Statutes; it is recorded as unconfirmed rather than assumed absent.

Enforcement

The statute also independently prohibits any window tinting, of any zone, that reduces the driver's clear view through the windshield or side/rear windows, or that substantially impairs the ability to see into the vehicle from outside (Neb. Rev. Stat. section 60-6,257(1)(a)). Light transmission and luminous reflectance are each defined in the statute as a percentage ratio of light passing through, or reflected outward by, the sunscreening/transparent material relative to total light falling on the window.

Notes

A 2025 bill, LB106, would have tightened the front side window limits from 35%/35% to a 20% luminous reflectance ceiling and 20% light transmission floor, but LB106 was marked dead on April 17, 2026, and did not become law, so the 35% front side window transmission floor, 35% reflectance ceiling, and 20% rear-zone transmission floor described above remain the current codified figures as of the verification date. The fetched official statute text noted its last legislative amendment was Laws 1993, LB 370, section 353, consistent with LB106 not having taken effect. The fetched text did not distinguish MPV/SUV/van rear-window treatment separately from passenger cars, and did not specify whether transmission is measured as net film alone or combined glass-plus-film; both are left unconfirmed rather than guessed.
