The rules, window by window

Windshield

Transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the topmost portion of the windshield only if it does not extend downward beyond the AS-1 line or more than five inches from the top of the windshield, whichever is closer to the top, and is not red or amber in color (47 O.S. 12-422).

The standard in the law's own words

The section also generally prohibits any object or material on the windshield or side or rear windows placed so as to obstruct or reduce the driver's clear view.

Reflectivity

Side and rear window material must have a luminous reflectance of at most 25 percent; glass coating materials and sunscreening devices are defined to exclude anything with a mirrored or mirror-like finish (47 O.S. 12-422).

Color restrictions

The windshield top-strip material may not be red or amber in color (47 O.S. 12-422). No color restriction is stated for side or rear windows.

Medical exemption

The Commissioner of Public Safety may issue an exemption for a person who needs shielding from the sun for medical reasons, supported by written attestation from a licensed physician; a person may then operate the vehicle with altered light transmission through the side or rear windows in accordance with the exemption (47 O.S. 12-422).

Enforcement

Violation is a misdemeanor punishable as provided in 47 O.S. 17-101. The standard is stated as combined transmittance: the material in conjunction with the approved glazing must have a light transmission of at least 25 percent. Vehicles model year 1996 and older may use material with at least 10 percent light transmission (and matching reflectance limit) if equipped with functional outside mirrors on both sides.

Notes

The 25 percent combined-transmittance floor and 25 percent reflectance cap apply to side and rear windows of regulated vehicles generally; there is no separate sedan vs MPV/SUV split, but windows to the rear of the driver's seat in vehicles licensed as buses or taxicabs are excepted, along with rearview mirrors, sun visors, bus directional signs, and defroster equipment.
