The rules, window by window

Windshield

A person may not operate a motor vehicle with a windshield that allows less than 70 percent light transmittance. Nontransparent materials may be used along the top edge of the windshield if they do not extend downward more than four inches from the top edge or beyond the AS-1 line, whichever is lowest, and in a small lower left-hand corner area (Utah Code 41-6a-1635(1)(a), (3)(a)-(b), effective 5/7/2025).

The section also prohibits signs, posters, other nontransparent material, debris, frost, or hanging objects that materially obstruct the operator's view.

Reflectivity

No windshield or window may be composed of, covered by, or treated with any material or component that presents a metallic or mirrored appearance (Utah Code 41-6a-1635(1)(c)).

Medical exemption

Utah Code 41-6a-1635 contains no medical exemption provision; the section as amended through the 2025 General Session was read in full and none appears.

Enforcement

A violation is an infraction, and a peace officer may not request registration or license suspension for windshield or front side window transmittance violations (subsections (9)-(10)). The front side window standard carries a statutory metering allowance: no more than a 5 percent variance observed by a peace officer metering the light transmittance. A vehicle with tinting on any window (other than the permitted windshield areas) must have rear-view mirrors mounted on both the left and right sides (subsection (5)). Windows meeting federal statutes and regulations for window composition, covering, light transmittance, and treatment are deemed compliant (subsection (4)).

Notes

Front side windows: at least 35 percent light transmittance with a 5 percent metering variance (Utah Code 41-6a-1635(1)(b)). Rear windows, including rear side windows located behind the vehicle operator, may carry nontransparent materials with no VLT floor (subsection (3)(c)), subject to the dual-mirror requirement. The statute states the limits as the transmittance the window allows (combined through the glass as installed) rather than net film. No sedan vs MPV/SUV distinction.
