The rules, window by window

Windshield

A person shall not install, replace, or cover the window glazing in a windshield with a transparent, translucent, or opaque material (Vehicle Equipment Regulation, AR 122/2009, s.70(1)). No top-strip exception is stated in this subsection.

The standard in the law's own words

Alberta's rule is a flat prohibition rather than a percentage threshold: no person may install, replace, or cover the windshield or a left/right side window forward of or beside the driver with ANY transparent, translucent, or opaque material (s.70(1)). This effectively bars aftermarket film of any darkness on the windshield and front side windows, not just film below a certain VLT.

Reflectivity

A person shall not install, replace, or cover window glazing with material that reflects the headlamps of approaching vehicles, or that reflects sunlight, into the eyes of another driver (s.70(3)-(4)).

Medical exemption

No medical exemption provision found in s.70 or s.71 of the Vehicle Equipment Regulation. Not confirmed either way from a primary source in this pass.

Enforcement

Section 70(5) permits replacing manufacturer-installed glazing with the same type of glazing. Section 70(6) permits clear untinted frost shields that do not impair the view. Section 70(7) permits window stickers that do not limit the driver's field of vision.

Notes

Verified directly from the regulation text (Alta Reg 122/2009, consolidated to 129/2025) via CanLII. Section 70(2) permits added glazing/tint material on the rear window only if the vehicle has outside rear-view mirrors on both the left and right (s.74(2) compliant). No provision was found restricting rear SIDE windows (behind the driver), so those appear unrestricted. No numeric VLT percentage appears anywhere in s.70; commonly repeated aggregator claims of a specific percentage for Alberta were not corroborated in the text reviewed and should be treated as unverified.
